Richard Dawkins has found similarities between the plight of atheists and the gay rights movement as well; many atheists remain "in the closet" so to speak for fear of the reactions of their friends, families, and coworkers should they ever reveal their godlessness. So in addition to the stigma of being "angry" there's the potential shame of being the "other." Dawkins' Out Campaign (http://outcampaign.org/) is worth checking out. Who would want the non-mainstream minority to ever find its voice?

Eeegads! It's funny, as I was reading this entry, I thought, how alike atheism and feminism are in terms of perceptions of the "angry other." As long as people that don't subscribe to mainstream ideas are quiet and nice, it's ok to hear from them. God (pun intended) forbid we should be angry! Well, at least atheists are above scientologists in the view of the American public… Eeegads!
